A look at how the AFSCME is harming families:

In June 2003, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)  announced that they planned on co-sponsoring a pro-abortion march (March for Freedom of Choice) slated for April 25, 2004. The march, sponsored by NOW, NARAL, the Feminist Majority, and Planned Parenthood were organizing the march in Washington, D.C. in order to promote abortion and raise awareness about the upcoming presidential election.

The announcement of the co-sponsorship left pro-life groups confused as abortion had nothing to do with labor issues. AFSCME’s website discusses women’s rights in the workplace and had worked with pro-abortion groups to secure contraceptive coverage in employee health insurance plans however, abortion had never before been directly or indirectly mentioned.

The current contract for the employees in the city of Urbana, IL maintains that abortion is considered an event that constitutes a need for “temporary disabilities” in which the employee cannot or should not on medical advice perform her job.  Also on this list are “pregnancy, miscarriages, … childbirth, and recovery therefrom.” More information regarding the statues of the contract can be found in the document.
